Stege's history: It is believed that the city originated around 1200, and a castle was built south of the city there. At that time, there was an extensive trade in herring near Scania, which made Stege very wealthy. Around the 15th century, moats, city walls and gate towers were built. However, the lucrative herring fishery came to an end in the 16th century, whereby the city's heyday disappeared. The white gold: Trade and Tourism. Tuesday market in Stege starts the first Tuesday in July and lasts until mid-August. All the streets are filled with stalls, activities and people, so it is possible to do a good deal or just have fun at one of the many cafes. The Møn public meeting has been held since 2015 and has been a great success, where local, regional and national organizations can enter into dialogue with the citizens. It started in Askeby, but has later been moved to Stege By, because there is better space for the growing participants. The herring market, the first weekend in September, is always a big attraction, where people come year after year to take part in the good atmosphere, and to taste the special black herring. There are plenty of other activities over the weekend, including artisans with stalls and musical elements. Silderuten (the herring route) in Stege is a city walk that takes you through 30 entries, which are marked with a herring!
